Medical Treatment

Access to medical treatment in the UK

If you are sick or ill, tell your host family and see their doctor if possible. If you aren’t living with a host family, contact the school Welfare Officer and ask about seeing a doctor. If you need specialist help, you must see a general doctor first.

Longer term students staying in Brighton are advised to register with a local GP (General Practitioner or doctor) and a dentist.

Some medicines and painkillers are available from chemists / pharmacies, but a doctor may prescribe you a course of medicine. Prescriptions for medicine cost £9 in the UK.

Medical treatment such as seeing a doctor (called a GP / General Practicioner) or receiving emergency hospital treatment is usually free for students from most European Union countries and others with reciprocal arrangements. Students from other countries will usually have to pay to see a doctor.

Medical insurance

Students from all countries will receive free access to emergency medical treatment but usually receive a bill after the treatment is complete.

We recommend that all students take out appropriate private travel and medical insurance in their own country before travelling to the UK.

HealthCare International Insurance

If you require insurance for your trip, whether it be for health, possessions or travel, ISE Brighton recommends HealthCare International for policies that suit international students and visitors to the UK.
